Create a Movable Electric Horse Fence: Introduction

These movable fences use step-in posts, half-inch polytape or polyrope, and battery or solar-powered chargers to permit quick setup and easy movement from one place to another. Use them to define pastures, control grazing, separate horses, make horse-catching easier, or keep horses away from hazards.

Electric Fence Chargers

We recommend battery or solar-powered chargers for movable fences, since in most cases (unless you have lots of different AC outlets in the right places) AC chargers are not practical. We also believe in keeping the charger's power down. That allows one to use a battery-powered charger for weeks on end without recharging or replacing batteries. Or if one prefers a solar-powered unit, it permits use of an all-in-one unit, which is easier to move about than a solar-powered system with a separate panel, battery, and charger. In most cases strong chargers aren't needed, partly because most horses respond well to low-key shocks; and partly because most movable fences operate within a framework of outer fences--so even in the unlikely event that a horse does get through the movable fence, it cannot go trotting off to town. Battery-powered Chargers:

If you're getting one of these get two 12-volt batteries -- so that one can be recharged while the other is in place and working. Make sure they are deep cycle (boat or golf cart stye) rather than car batteries, and figure on being able to run about 1 joule of output with a 60 amp/hour battery for about a month before the battery needs to be recharged (see batteries below).

Solar-powered Chargers:

These are more expensive but use no house current and require no bothersome recharging. If you get a system without a battery, plan on buying a deep cycle (boat or golf cart style) battery locally. A 25 to 35 amp-hour deep cycle battery will operate a 1-joule solar charger system, while a 50 to 75 amp-hour battery will operate a 2-joule system.

Undergate and Hookup Wire

This heavily insulated wire can contain and carry an electric fence charger's high-voltage output. You won't need much to connect to a movable fence--or even to electrically join conductors or carry the charge under a gate (if the fence is interrupted or you have more than one gate).
