T-post Accessories: Post Driver, Bracing Systems, and Earth Anchors
The manual post driver listed below (product 15-05) is handy for driving angle-iron posts into the ground. However, if you are driving tall posts on a stepladder, never have a co-worker steady the upper part of a post with his or her hands, because the driver can do severe damage to those hands as it descends.
Regarding braces, all fences place sideways stress on corner posts, end posts, and the posts on both sides of a gate–and animal impacts, storms, or falling branches can increase that stress. The products listed here provide the reinforcement needed by the corner, end, and gate posts of T-post systems. The Wedge-Loc™ diagonal brace kit (product 09-97) enables one T-post to brace another in a manner appropriate for end post bracing systems; the corner double-in-line brace kit (09-98) permits construction of a corner brace. The horizontal brace kit (product 09-96) permits construction of a horizontal brace between two vertical posts. If very great stress upon the braced posts are anticipated, it is advisable to encase all the fence posts that enter the ground in cement footings (see how to install a cement footing ).
An alternative to braces is the earth anchor, one of which should be placed along the line of the fence (but extending beyond the fence) to support an end post. To support a corner, place the anchor or anchors outside the fence. Then string a wire or cable from the end of the earth anchor to a point near the top of the T-post and tighten this connection to ensure strong support. Products 09-62 and 09-63 offer one sort of earth anchor arrangement while products 16-11 and 02-07HT1 offer another. The first system uses a relatively small duckbill earth anchor driven into the ground with product 09-63 and attached to an end, corner, or gate post with a cable. The second system uses an earth anchor with a 4-inch auger that is installed by placing a metal rod through the hole at the end of the auger and screwing the auger into the ground. This earth anchor is attached to the end, corner, or gate post by running a 12.5 gauge wire between the end of the auger and the post and making it good and taut.
