Insulators for Wood and Vinyl Posts (general)

Insulators for wood posts are typically attached to the post with one or two nails, though for a firmer join one can use wood screws. The wood screw option becomes more attractive if the wood post is covered by a vinyl sleeve such as product 09-94W. In attaching insulators to stand-alone vinyl posts it is best to start with insulators that have two holes, so as to get a reasonably firm attachment, and to use shorter wood screws (product 10-03) rather than longer wood screws or nails. In dealing with relatively narrow vinyl sleeves covering T-posts (such as product 09-94T), use the shorter wood screw (product 10-03), but set it slightly to one side so that it does not strike the flange of the T-post. In general, such attachments to vinyl posts are not so strong as attachments to wood posts, but they do not have to be as they are usually supporting an electric fence supplementing a barrier fence rather than a stand-alone electric fence. If one is planning a stand-alone electric fence with vinyl uprights, it is recommended that one use wood posts covered with vinyl sleeves at the gates, ends, and corners.
