The Dare Sentry 300, which can use either a 6-volt or 12-volt battery as its power source, administers a considerably stronger jolt than the Yellow jacket, DS-140, or DSX-140. For campers, hikers, and horse exhibitors who want something light but stronger than the DSX-140 we recommend combining the DS-300 (weight 2.5 pounds) with battery 01-17 (6 volts, 14 amp hours, 6 pounds), which will power the DS-300 for about 3 days. For those who want larger longer-lasting batteries, we do not offer large “deep cycle” batteries (the kind needed) on this website, but they can be obtained at www.ebatteriestogo.com or at almost any local store that sells boat or golf cart batteries. Voltage data: The DS-300 electric fence charger will keep more than enough voltage on the line to shock large predators (for bears 4000 volts are recommended) so long as the weed burden is minor (affording nothing better than a 300 ohm path to the ground); and it will maintain more than the 2000 volts needed to reliably shock horses in the face of a major (100 ohm) weed burden. Joule range: The DS-300 produces a 0.6-joule pulse on a 500-ohm circuit and a 0.5-joule pulse on a 100-ohm circuit. (For more about joules see Charger Safety, Horse Fences, and Joules). Other animals Besides being well-suited to charging portable corrals and paddocks, the DS-300 is capable of protecting campsites against javelinas, feral pigs, foxes, wolves, mountain lions, bears, and other large predators. It is also good at containing dogs and at keeping small animals out of gardens.
