Dare Sentry 140 and Dare Sentry X 140 (DS-140 and DSX-140), Low Impedance Electric Fence Chargers, UL Listed, 0.35 Joules

The high-performance Sentry DS-140 and DSX-140 (matches for the Power Wizard 350B and the Power Wizard 350B plus) put out 0.35 joules and employ advanced technology to provide peak output in the face of difficult fence conditions. Like the Yellow Jacket, these light 1.6-pound electric fence chargers can use 4 D cells (flashlight batteries), a 6-volt battery, or a 12-volt battery as their power source and are built to clamp directly onto a ground rod, which makes them very convenient to use with portable electric fences. If you start with fresh alkaline D cells or with battery 01-17 (6 volts, 14 amp hours) you can expect the charger to run at least 4 weeks. If the DSX-140, which has three settings, is set to full power output, the expected battery life is at least 4 weeks; if set on "night" output it is 6 weeks; and if set on the lowest "battery saver" setting it is 9 weeks. Both the DS-140 and DSX-140 will run about 8 weeks at full power output with battery 01-32 (12 volts, 14 amp hours). Voltage data: Both of these electric fence chargers can maintain a high enough voltage (over 4000 volts) to protect a campsite by shocking large animals (wolves, bears, bison) so long as the fence is simple and no weeds are leaning on it. Similarly, these electric fence chargers can maintain more than the 2000 volts needed to reliably shock horses if weeds provide nothing more than a 300-ohm path to the ground; and they can ably defend yards and gardens against small animals by maintaining over 700 volts on the line, even in the face of a major 100-ohm weed burden. Joule range: When using a 12-volt battery these chargers put out 0.3 joules or better on a 200 to 500 ohm circuit. As in the case of the Yellow Jacket, however, this energy drops by about half when D cells are used as the power source. (For more about joules see Charger Safety, Horse Fences, and Joules). Other animals: These electric fence chargers are well-suited to defending campsites by discouraging large predators like mountain lions, wolves, and bears. They can be used to charge the electric fences of portable corrals and paddocks, as well as to charge electric wires on permanent horse fences in order to prevent horses from chewing or leaning on the fence. And they are excellent at keeping pets and small animals (dogs, cats, raccoons, woodchucks, rabbits, etc.) out of yards, gardens, and other areas. General data: The DS-140 has a flashing light that shows the charger and its immediate connections are working properly, while the DSX-140 provides a digital display of fence voltage, battery status, and pulsed charge rate. Both models feature all-weather construction, built-in lightning protection, and a one-year manufacturer's warranty covering both defects and lightning damage. Batteries are not included.
